# Appearance

The **Appearance** tab on an agent controls how the widget looks and behaves for visitors. A live preview panel on the right updates as you make changes — you do not need to save and reload to see the result.

## What you can customise

### Display name

The name shown in the chat widget header and the initial greeting. This is separate from the internal name you give the agent in the dashboard.

### Avatar

Two options:

- **Initials** — automatically generated from the display name (e.g. "SA" for "Support Agent"). You can change the background colour.
- **Image** — upload a square image (PNG or JPG). Recommended size: 256 x 256 px. The image is cropped to a circle in the widget.

### Primary colour

Sets the accent colour used for the chat bubble launcher, message bubbles, and buttons. Enter a hex value or use the colour picker.

### Greeting message

The first message the agent sends when a visitor opens the widget, before they have typed anything. Keep it short and action-oriented.

Examples:
- "Hi there — how can I help you today?"
- "Welcome! Ask me anything about your order or account."

This is distinct from the greeting message in the personality (which is sent at the start of a conversation). The appearance greeting is purely cosmetic — it appears before any conversation starts and does not consume conversation context.

### Input placeholder

The hint text shown inside the message input box. Defaults to "Type a message...". Use this to set expectations — for example, "Ask about your order" or "How can we help?".

### Widget position

Where the launcher button appears on the page:

| Option | Position |
|---|---|
| Bottom-right | Right side of the viewport (default) |
| Bottom-left | Left side of the viewport |

## Preview panel

The preview panel on the right shows a live render of the widget with your current settings applied. Changes take effect immediately — no need to publish appearance changes separately.

Appearance settings are saved automatically when you make a change.
